PokerStars has remained the top attraction for visitors by far in recent months, maintaining an average of 27,000 cash game players involved in online activities at any given time with an overall peak of 46,091. This is partly seen to be due to the fact that it is currently running one of its largest attractions, the World Championship of Online Poker (commonly known as the WCOOP). This has guaranteed a total of over $50,000,000 in prize money being distributed throughout the tournament events, with a grand prize of $10,000,000 up for grabs in the main event. Full Tilt and Party Poker along with iPoker followed PokerStars to round off the top four ranked websites in their respective order, making it the 11th consecutive week that that all four have remained in the same slots without changing top positions. All websites saw a boost in overall players for the week, with the second-ranked Full Tilt showing a weekly average of 17,400 and a total peak of 28,000 players.

In fact, across the board for all of the top 10 poker sites operated worldwide a net increase was seen, with some contenders for the top site title such as the Cereus Network fluctuating greatly from day to day between 6th and 8th place in the rankings scale. Particular interest has also been paid recently to the French market, with PokerScout moving a portion of its tracking to monitor operations in the newly developing French sector as more and more casinos expand online into the virtual environment. Winamax.fr, for instance, has recently moved up to the 12th rank worldwide in terms of regular players, seeing an average of 1,380 throughout the day and a peak of 3,254. PokerStars.fr, however, still leads the French market and ranks 10th overall in the world with an average of 1,520 players a day.

There were relatively few women playing poker when Rosario first started out, she commented, and while since  then the number of women involved in the game has increased they are still a relative minority compared to other players. Rosario, who now lives in Southern California in order to be near to Los Angeles’ many casinos is typical of what the University of Connecticut’s gambling experts have termed an evolving gambling culture and one that continues to attract more and more women due to the increased opportunities for active gambling games such as poker and craps.

Jonathan Beazley, who is an interventionist at the University of Connecticut’s Counseling and Mental Health Services, has also seen first-hand the number of gambling women rise higher and higher during the period of the past decade. He believes that, as our societal ideas regarding women and gambling have evolved, women have gradually felt more and more accepted into the general gambling culture and the games connected to the culture. He added that, as a result, there was considerably less stigma attached to women who gamble.

Research has indicated that college women are still gambling less than their male counterparts are, and men are still twice as likely to develop gambling problems. In 2008 women aged between 20 and 29 that called the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling’s Helpline accounted for just 9.6% of the total of problem gamblers, whilst men within the same age range accounted for 23.3%.

It is widely believed that part of the added attraction for women is the heavy and glamorous TV coverage of poker, as well as heavy advertising for other forms of gaming, whether at casinos or online. Some also believe that women are actually better suited to poker, as their egos do not interfere with the playing of the game.

Hintze’s time over the past few years has largely been spent in pursuit of information regarding the scandal, citing her determination and desire to uncover more information with regards to educating and informing the poker public, and also finding out just who was responsible for the scandal. Hintze herself was able to obtain computer screen shots of the accounts of those cheating in the scandal, which she got from the administrative systems of both AP and UB. These images, when put together with her undoubted knowledge of just how the systems operate, convinced Hintze that the co-founder of Absolute Poker was fairly certainly the one behind the cheating scandal.

Hintze then posted a selection of the screen shots on her blog during the course of the last weekend as well as accompanying explanations of just what the viewers were looking at. Her first screen shot illustrates basic account information for Tom’s player account, called ‘PotChopper’, which was set up in June 2005. After this, she displays a screen shot from UB’s anti-fraud system, called ieSnare. The program was capable of seeing AP accounts after the two poker providers collaborated in order to set up the CEREBUS Network. The image itself displays records of the PotChopper account’s loggias to UB, and the information contained included dates and times of logins as well as a possible unique computer identifier and IP addresses.

Hintze follows up with more screenshots from AP, which illustrate logins corresponding to a unique user identifier that was ascribed to Tom’s computer and his own user ID was matched with logins to the foremost super user account called Potripper. She then posted screenshots of logins by tow further proven cheating accounts, called Doubledrag and Graycat, which display close associations to the same user ID and IP addresses. 

In order to further illustrate her point that Tom was overseeing the cheating accounts she put up a screenshot of PotRipper’s financial history, with the account getting a $70,000 transfer from Doubledrag on September 20, 2007. The next day the AP system noted the account as a result of its size and withdrew $70,217.25 from the account. Five days after this Tom took out $85,000 from the account.

The overall reaction to the postings has not caused a massive reaction, with some posters praising her journalistic work and endeavors and some calling for the sacking of Tom, although responses have been more muted that may have been expected.

The final hand of the game saw Baldwin shoving his big blind stack boasting an A-5 of hearts, with Williams tanking before finally calling with a pair of pocket deuces. Then came the flop-A-7-6, which granted Baldwin the top pair and put him very much in the pole position to comfortably double up. It was just at this point that disaster befell Baldwin as a deuce hitting on the turn improved Williams to a set and left Baldwin drawing dead.

Speaking to Poker News Daily after the tournament Williams spoke of his relief at coming out on top in the tournament, stating that the win has been some time in the making. There is a core group of other players, he added, including Nenad Medic, Tuan Le, Michael Mizrachi, Joe Cassidy and himself. Phil Ivey, Nenad, Grinder and Tuan all had won the match previously and he said it felt good to win the match once as well.

Meanwhile John O’Shea, who was the short stack coming into the WPT Championship final table, was knocked out of the tournament in sixth position, pocketing himself a useful £199,000. Billy Baxter, who dropped a $4.4 million stack against Williams, was pushed back into fifth place. Baxter then open-shoved in holding A-Jack of Spades, with Williams calling holding K-10 suited Hearts. To everyone’s surprise, the flop came out A-Q-J, which gave Williams the nuts, whilst giving Baxter pairs. Baxter came away with a decent $246,000 consolation, and Williams suddenly found himself holding half of all chips in play heading into four-handed play. Next to depart was the high-stakes professional David Benyamine, with Shawn Buchanan also falling shortly after.

It’s tough competition for Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars. Both of them have excellent customer service and bonus features that will knock your socks off. However, PokerStars is trying their best to be number one, and they want to increase their traffic and push Full Tilt Poker out of the way. PokerStars also feels that people have lied and said things incorrectly about their status and estimates. They will soon be correcting this and they hope that when they correct all of this, it will help get them closer to the top.

When PokerStars fixes the current situation, there is no telling what else they might do. There are some rumors that they might be adding in new features or possibly more games, but no one is quite certain yet. However, the members of PokerStars continue to wait, and they are really excited about what PokerStars is going to do in order to help clean up some of the damage that has been done to their name.
