Over the course of the last week, we have heard the announcement of two new services aimed at the online gaming sector, with each one offering something alternative and clearly different from the existing services on offer. One of the new options was a gaming service called Safe Gaming System (commonly referred to as SGS), that describes itself as a “responsible gaming service” used as a safety net that will protect online gamblers from getting involved in excessive gambling.
The Safe Gaming System offers users and the industry alike what has been called a “two-pronged approach” to the problem, firstly aiding by helping those players already registered with the service to set themselves affordable limits for their gambling based upon their own personal income and expenses. SGS urges its users to set aside both time and money limits well in advance of getting involved in gambling and away from “the enticing atmosphere of a gaming venue.” As a result, it claims that players will thus be able to think much more rationally with regards to their limits and capacities and will therefore be able to set reasonable personal limits.
The second prong of the SGS approach is that it provides a dedicated mechanism for players to successfully and safely fund their online casino accounts. The first step in this is for players to open an SGS account and then fund their online SGS account for what is termed a “budget period”. In order to do this they must pre-purchase their agreed ‘affordable gambling limit’ and will then be given a Safe Gambling System debit card which they can subsequently use to fund their various accounts at all online casinos accepting the SGS debit card.
SGS has confirmed that in order to be eligible players will be required to agree they will only use their SGS account funds in order to gamble online in addition to not funding their online gambling by any other source. As soon as registered players have reached their pre-agreed gambling limit for an agreed period SGS will refuse to accept any more funds from the player for that budget period. At this point players will need to wait for the beginning of the next specified budget period before being allowed to once more gamble.
The second such service is provided by ImpulsePay, a new age verification service – something that has become an issue in a number of countries, most recently in Canada. Online casinos would need to add the ImpulsePay ‘Buy Now’ button on their web site and the gambler would need to click on the button and then enter their cell phone number. They would subsequently be sent a secure individual PIN via SMS that they would have to enter at their chosen casino website. This would inform the online casino whether or not the cell phone number in question was registered to someone aged 18 or over.
