In the UK, a lot of people got upset recently, including the Advertising Standards Authority. The reason why they got mad was because of an ad online that spoke positively about excessive online gambling and encouraged people to engage in it.
This type of ad is not allowed in the UK and it broke the codes that the organization has set. People are disappointed that a lottery ad was banned in the UK. Some feel that the UK was over reacting, while others don’t.
The ad was sent to hundreds of people online, because it was used in a form that was in an email, and it said “The more you play, the more likely you are to win.” That is why they say it helped to encourage members to play excessively. The Advertising Standards Authority got highly offended that it was even allowed through and that no one else caught it in time.
The main reason why this type of ad is not allowed in the UK is that they don’t want to encourage problem gambling, and if this ad is allowed, it could do just that. If members stand a chance at winning a lot because they play excessively, many of them would join and do it over and over just in the hopes that they would win, just like the ad promised.
The lottery officials feel that the UK over dramatized the situation and that it was mainly just a campaign ad that was suppose to just have some humor in it. They believe that the ad was just simply taken out of context, because if they would have really paid attention to it, they would have noticed the humor in it.
The Lottery officials also claim that the ad was just trying to provide some helpful information, and there was no way that it was trying to promote excessive play.
This is not the first time that the UK has banned ads. They have banned ads when only one complaint has been made. They want to protect the people, and they feel that gambling should not be promoted in such a way as to encourage them in their bad habits. There are lots of people struggling for money in the UK, and they should save that money instead of using it for gambling online.
Even though there are a lot of people against gambling online in the UK, instead of banning it, they will just continue watching the ads and taking care of complaints whenever there is one made.
